Heatmaps: What is it and how can I use it?

Heatmaps help you understand what your clients are paying attention to in VR. Heatmap data can give you greater insight into the design experience by tracking the gaze of anyone viewing your VR projects in a headset, and the panning movements of people viewing in browser mode.

Unlike traditional heat mapping which is achieved with mouse movement and assumes users are tracing their interest with a mouse, VR heat mapping tracks what users are looking at. Since VR gives users the power to explore a 360 degree image however they choose, understanding their interaction with it through detailed heatmap data provides key insights about audience behavior.

Why should I review heatmap data?

Reviewing your heatmap data can help you:

  • Understand which design elements are drawing focus
  • Anticipate questions or requests for revision based on focus
  • Test sitelines, branding and other elements to see if they draw focus as intended
  • Discover how your clients are viewing VR scenes and improve your VR experiences moving forward

Where can I view heatmap data?

Start by logging in to your Yulio account. Next, open the VR project that you’d like to view heatmap data for.

From the Edit Project page, select the Analytics tab.

Scroll down to the Sessions data section. Select the eye icon next to any session to view the heatmap data for that specific session.

Heatmap data will be visualized for each scene in the project. Click and drag around the scene to view heatmap data across the entire scene. If your project includes more than one scene, use the navigation tools to view heatmap data in more scenes.

Use the Opacity slider to see make the heatmap more or less transparent.

Use the Intensity slider to change the intensity of the heatmap so that you can see what the viewer paid the most attention to relative to other areas in the scene.

To review average heatmap data across all sessions during a specific period of time, return to the Analytics tab and adjust the time frame. From there, select the green Analyze Sessions button.
